Minamata Convention on Mercury

Convention on Mercury is an international treaty striving to protect the world’s population from mercury’s toxic effects. It is named after the “Minamata disease”, which is a disorder affecting the nervous system due to mercury toxicity. This epidemic occurred in the city of Minamata in Japan in 1956. Methylmercury accumulated in fish, which was the main source of food in this population. The objective of this treaty is to limit the exposure of humans to mercury pollution by limiting its release into the environment. In order to reach this goal, it approaches the processes in mercury’s lifecycle such as its mining, export, import, safe storage, and disposal. This treaty will be our guide to which we will adhere to in our methodology of mining.

We are also adhering to the “Global opportunities for long-term development” (GOLD) initiative, which aims at applying alternative gold mining techniques in order to reduce the mercury release into the environment.

GOLD Initiative

The Responsible Gold Mining Principles (RGMPs) are a new framework that set out clear expectations for consumers, investors and the downstream gold supply chain as to what constitutes responsible gold mining. Working with our members, the world’s leading gold mining companies, and collaborating with key industry stakeholders, the World Gold Council has set out the Principles that it believes address key environmental, social and governance issues for the gold mining sector
